GAIA-Uganda has embarked on a conservation project that will contribute to the conservation of wild plant varieties that naturally occur in tropical rainforests, wetlands, and savanna ecosystems that support the country's biodiversity. Notably, over 50% of Uganda’s wildlife is outside protected areas and virtually all ecosystems face unprecedented threats that if not prevented may result in species extinction. The GAIA Seed Bank Project supports schools in establishing and managing seed banks of wild plant varieties primarily for ecological restoration, medicinal plants, research, cultural heritage, and biodiversity preservation.
Uganda is one of the most vulnerable countries to the effects of climate change in sub-Saharan Africa. Climate change has interrupted the seasonal weather changes resulting in shorter or longer rains and hasher droughts affecting water availability. The Gray Water project that is currently piloted at Merry Reparatrix Secondary School targets boarding students from different parts of the country to learn how to treat gray water from the bathrooms using a natural model (benchmarking on a wetland) to grow trees. The project ranked in the 3rd position and won a grant during the GAIA 2024 Environment Hackathon that was sponsored by AIS and Tower Semiconductor.
Kidepo Valley National Park experienced the extinction of large mammals, including rhinos, derby’s eland, and the oryx in the 1980s due to human-induced threats. In recent times, the population of humans, elephants, and buffalo has been on the rise, increasing their interactions on the shared landscape. Some of the practices fueling the conflict include encroachment, poaching, and limited conflict mitigation strategies. The human wildlife conflict is manifesting in various forms, including crop damage, property destruction, injury and fatalities, while posing a significant threat to local livelihoods, human safety and endangering wildlife populations. The GAIA Human-Wildlife Conflict Project for Kidepo Valley National Park aims to empower learners in identifying and implementing actions that will reduce human-wildlife conflicts in Orom village around Kidepo Valley National Park.
