GAIA Seed Bank Project
GAIA-Uganda has embarked on a conservation project that will contribute to the conservation of wild plant varieties that naturally occur in tropical rainforests, wetlands, and savanna ecosystems that support the country's biodiversity. Notably, over 50% of Uganda’s wildlife is outside protected areas and virtually all ecosystems face unprecedented threats that if not prevented may result in species extinction. The GAIA Seed Bank Project supports schools in establishing and managing seed banks of wild plant varieties primarily for ecological restoration, medicinal plants, research, cultural heritage, and biodiversity preservation.
Using Gray Water for Irrigation
Uganda is one of the most vulnerable countries to the effects of climate change in sub-Saharan Africa. Climate change has interrupted the seasonal weather changes resulting in shorter or longer rains and hasher droughts affecting water availability. The Gray Water project that is currently piloted at Merry Reparatrix Secondary School targets boarding students from different parts of the country to learn how to treat gray water from the bathrooms using a natural model (benchmarking on a wetland) to grow trees. The project ranked in the 3rd position and won a grant during the GAIA 2024 Environment Hackathon that was sponsored by AIS and Tower Semiconductor.
